Simplicio "Jan" Maramba
Simplicio "Jan" Maramba passed away on May 7, 1982, of complications of leukemia, at the age of 78. He was the last survivor of the ten founders of the Samahang Pilipino ng Pittsburgh (SPNP) whose members presently include families in Western PA, Ohio and West Virginia.
Jan came to Pittsburgh in 1933 and graduated from Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon University) in 1939 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Before coming to Pittsburgh he attended Los Angeles University. He married the former Helen Tomko in 1934.
As an electrical engineer, Jan worked for different companies including Westinghouse, General Electric, United States Steel, Mesta Machines, and R.P. Patterson Engineering.
After organizing the SPNP in 1957 with other Filipinos in the area, Jan together with his wife Helen, and their three children, remained very active in the association.
Jan is survived by his wife Helen, his daughters Ramona Polen and Doreen Krudt and their respective families. His only son, Daniel died in 1981.
