»  Araw ng Kalayaan (Philippine Independence Day)
    Sunday, June 12, 2011

The FAAP celebrated Philippine Independence Day on June 12, 2011 by having a group potluck at Homeville. After being trapped with indoor activities for months, that day was a welcome time to break free and bask in the warm sunshine tempered by a cool spring breeze! Most importantly, it was an enjoyable time to meet old friends and establish new ones.  We are grateful for Dave and Carmen Shively for organizing the event.  We should also thank our President, Jun Calejesan for providing the mouth-watering lechon (roasted pig). (Of course, if you were late, sorry the crunchy skin was gone).  But most of all, thank you to all the people who came to the party. The foods you brought were all delicious and reminded everybody of a Philippine fiesta.  It was uplifting to play the Filipino games all over again and watch our kids enjoying them.  The YFAP is also grateful for everybody who donated the delicious deserts and kakanin and to the people who bought them.  Our enterprising YFAP kids were all smiles after the day was over.   It was a day full of fun and laughter.

The day also reminded us that the Philippines and the USA had always been historically linked together even before our Philippine Independence Day. As Jaime Abola noted in his speech during the potluck, our Filipino patriots chose blue and red as the colors of our Philippine flag in honor of the American flag.

We will be celebrating our American Independence Day on July 4.  We should be grateful of the opportunity that we are here in America, a nation where there are abundant opportunities to fulfill our dreams and that of our children.  Because of our better luck, we should continue to support our country of origin - the Philippines.

Benigno Aguino Jr., the Philippine President, in his Independence speech, thanked the Fil-Americans for their continued support of their families back home.  He also is gladdened by Fil-Am dedication to promote the Philippine heritage.
