Henry the Hand

"Spread the Word and not the Germs" is a hand awareness health project promoted through school adoptions in Allegheny County, PA since 2003.

In 2005, Henry, our animated friend celebrity, became a world traveler. His travels to Brazil (2005) and the Philippines (Summer, 2006) have made an impact on the children of these countries.

The four principles of hand awareness are:

WASH your hands when they are dirty and before you eat.
DO NOT sneeze in your hands, sneeze in your elbow.
DO NOT cough in your hands, cough in your sleeve.
DO NOT put your fingers in your eyes, nose and mouth.

In 2006, Water Equals Life (WEL), founded by YFAP 1998 President Lawrence Purpura III, partnered with Henry by building artesian wells to support the fundamentals of controlling the spread of disease through proper hand washing.

Our youth members and their families who participate in this health project pay for their airfare and personal needs. Through various fundraisers, foreign and local sponsorships, and support from the Allegheny County Medical Society Alliance, Henry's ambassadors are able to Give a Hand in improving health by making the world aware of the roles our hands play in the spread of disease.
